We do not claim that the tendencies we see at work from the early days of the development project to contemporary developmentalism replicate exactly the features of mid-1930s and –1940s Germany, Italy and Japan. Although, as Gourevitch notes, important features of Nazi Germany were present in the policies of other states at the time, we readily acknowledge the historic specificity of this period.7 What we attempt to do, however, is to broker a conversation between two different kinds of heterodox approaches to development…”
